Mercury Marine has done it again. After stunning boaters in 2020 with the first-ever V12 outboard, the Brunswick-owned brand has now added a welcome complement -- the all-new V10 Verado.
The announcement will kickstart another banner year for Mercury in 2023, who have been working at a torrid pace over the last two years. After the much-heralded arrival of the V12 in 2020, the company also announced their first ever electric outboard earlier this year, and has made a commitment to offering an entire fleet of electric outboards by 2023. But first, they'll perch themselves atop the gas-powered marine segment with the arrival of the intelligently designed V10.
The new powerhead is a naturally aspirated 5.7 liter 10-cylinder outboard and will be offered in both 350 and 400 horsepower. Both will be offered with Mercury's intuitive Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) controls and advanced steering system, which Mercury claims will offer the fastest acceleration of any other outboard in its class, as well as the quietest operation whether at idle or full throttle. The new Verados are compatible with Mercury SmartCraft technologies but will also be offered with an optional dual-mode 48V/12V alternator to pair with Navico Group’s Fathom® e-power system, an integrated lithium-ion auxiliary power management system, which will eliminate the need for an onboard generator system.
The new engine will utilize a quad-cam design with an engine-specific gearcase made to optimize handling and control relative to the boat its paired with. A class-leading 150 amp alternator will charge the battery systems and support onboard electronics, and a large-diameter Revolution X™ prop will come standard to provide industry leading acceleration and control. An idle charge battery management system also provides on-water monitoring of battery voltage and will adjust the engine RPM at idle to boost the alternator output.
A standout feature of the V10 will be Adaptive Speed Control, which lets the driver maintain engine RPMs despite changes in load or conditions. This equates to better handling in swells, smoother low speed cruising, and tighter turning capability.
Another signature feature will be the engine cowling shape and design -- an ultra-narrow upper unit allows the V10 to be mounted just 26" from another engine for multi-engine configurations. A lightweight aluminum engine block also helps to produce a lighter overall weight on the transom. Both the 350 hp and 400 hp variations have a dry weight of 695 lbs (316 kg). The V10 is also calibrated to deliver full performance on 87-octane fuel while a closed-loop fuel system and Advanced Range Optimization (ARO) help to produce exceptional range.
The V10 Verado will also have a cowling design similar to the electric Avator motor with a top-cowl access door that allows you to access the oil spout without removing the cowl. An electronic oil sensor on a connected multi-function display also informs owners of oil levels.
Four colour options will be available to match your hull colour-- Pearl Fusion, Cold Fusion, Warm Fusion, and Phantom Black. A further five available accent colours allow you to customize the smaller details to match your boat's interior or overall aesthetic. The cowlings can also be ordered in a 'paint ready' condition for custom aftermarket colour schemes.
