Is Your Propeller Being Maximized? Choosing Right Without Starting a Dockside Debate


If you want to start an argument at a marina, forget politics or religion. Just ask: "What's the best propeller?"


Within minutes you'll have a pair of old salts sketching blade shapes on a napkin, a guy with a YouTube engineering degree quoting prop slip percentages, and someone insisting that "my cousin picked up six miles an hour and hundreds of dollars in fuel savings just by changing props."


Like most boating debates, everyone is right... and everyone is wrong.


The truth is that selecting the right propeller isn't about buying the fanciest design, or by copying what your neighbour has. It's about matching the propeller to your boat, your engine, and—most importantly—how you actually use it.


A properly matched propeller can improve acceleration, fuel economy, top speed, handling, and even extend engine life. A poor choice can leave your engine labouring like it's towing a barge—or screaming like it's trying to qualify for NASCAR.


Let's sort through the terminology and make choosing a prop a little less mysterious.


Sailboats: The Silent Partner


On a sailboat, the engine is called the auxiliary for good reason. Sailing is Plan A. The engine is Plan B—usually reserved for leaving the marina, entering a crowded harbour, or convincing everyone aboard that yes, you'll still make it home before dark.


Because of this, sailboat propellers are relatively small and are designed to strike a balance between two competing goals. They must provide enough thrust to manoeuvre confidently—especially in reverse—but create as little drag as possible when the sails are doing the work.


Most sailboats use one of two styles:


Fixed propellers are exactly what they sound like. The blades remain in position all the time. They're reliable, simple and relatively inexpensive.


Folding propellers tuck their blades neatly alongside the hub while sailing, dramatically reducing drag. Once the engine is engaged, centrifugal force opens the blades to provide thrust. For many sailors, upgrading to a folding prop is one of the best performance improvements they can make.


More recently, saildrives have become increasingly common. Instead of a conventional shaft, the engine drives a leg that exits the hull just aft of the keel, much like an oversized outboard lower unit. Saildrives are remarkably efficient and surprisingly powerful for their size, although propeller choices tend to be more limited than traditional shaft-driven systems.


Powerboats have a much harder job.

Unlike sailboats, the propeller isn't simply assisting. It's doing all the work—pushing thousands of pounds of boat through the water while balancing acceleration, cruising efficiency, handling, and top speed.


Manufacturers spend millions developing propellers that work well for the average owner. But "average" doesn't always describe your boating style. Maybe you spend weekends towing wakeboarders. Maybe you're carrying a full crew to the fishing grounds. Maybe you're simply chasing every knot.


That's where choosing the right propeller becomes worthwhile.b Start by gathering a few important facts:


  • Boat make, model, and length

  • Engine make, model, and horsepower

  • Recommended Wide Open Throttle (WOT) RPM range

  • Gear ratio

  • Current propeller diameter and pitch

  • Number of blades

  • Propeller material


Then ask yourself the most important question: What does your boat actually do?


A ski boat needs explosive acceleration. A fishing boat benefits from efficiency and steady handling. A cruiser carrying family, coolers, equipment and gear needs lots of thrust. A performance runabout? It wants speed. Your ideal propeller depends entirely on your answer.


Test Before You Guess


The best propeller decisions come from real numbers—not dockside folklore.

Load the boat the way you normally use it and record:


  • Maximum engine RPM at Wide Open Throttle (WOT)

  • GPS speed

  • Hole shot (acceleration)

  • Handling characteristics

  • Any ventilation or cavitation


Those numbers tell the real story.

Diameter vs. Pitch: The Two Numbers Everyone Talks About


Every propeller is identified by two measurements.


Diameter is the overall size of the circle made by the blade tips.


Pitch is the theoretical distance the propeller would move forward in one complete revolution if it were travelling through still water. Generally speaking, larger diameters produce more thrust and are commonly used on heavier, slower boats. Smaller diameters favour lighter, faster boats. Diameter is often determined by the engine manufacturer, leaving pitch as the primary tuning tool.


Increasing pitch generally produces higher top speed but slower acceleration. Reducing pitch improves hole shot and pulling power but usually sacrifices some top-end speed.


Like many things in life, you rarely get everything at once.


The Most Important Number: WOT RPM


Every engine is designed to operate within a recommended Wide Open Throttle (WOT) RPM range. This is your target:


If your engine can't reach that range, your propeller probably has too much pitch.

If your engine exceeds that range, your propeller likely has too little pitch. As a general rule, changing pitch by one inch changes engine speed by approximately 150 to 200 RPM, although every boat behaves a little differently.


For example:

Your engine's recommended WOT range is 5,500–6,000 RPM.

Your current propeller is 14×21.

At full throttle, your engine only reaches 5,100 RPM.


That's a clue the propeller is asking too much from the engine. Moving down to a 20 inch, or even a 19 inch, pitch should raise engine RPM and improve overall performance. It's one of the few times in boating when doing less actually gives you more.


Three Blades? Four? Five?

Blade count changes the personality of the boat.


A three-blade propeller remains the all-around favourite for speed and efficiency.


A four-blade propeller typically improves acceleration, low-speed handling, fuel economy, and the ability to stay on plane, making it popular on larger cruisers and tow boats.


Five-blade designs provide exceptional grip and smoothness, particularly in specialized performance or watersports applications.


There isn't a universal best choice—only the best choice for how you boat.


Aluminum or Stainless Steel?


Aluminum remains the most popular choice because it's affordable and performs well for the vast majority of recreational boaters.


Stainless steel is stronger, flexes less under load, and often delivers better overall performance. It also tolerates abuse better in areas with submerged hazards—although replacing one after an unfortunate encounter with a rock can make your wallet cry.


Putting It All Together


Choosing a propeller isn't about chasing the biggest diameter or the highest pitch.

It's about collecting good information and matching the propeller to your boating style.

Before buying, know:


  • Your boat and engine specifications

  • Your current propeller size

  • Your engine manufacturer’s recommendations (as a base point)

  • Your Wide Open Throttle (WOT) RPM

  • How you normally load the boat

  • Whether you want better acceleration, improved fuel economy, stronger handling, or higher top speed


Engine manufacturers work tirelessly to create the optimal propeller to marry to their engines. Rarely can they create either a ‘one size fits all,' or enough permutations to fit every need. Aftermarket suppliers can often fill in the gaps through two-piece systems, with the propeller and hub purchased separately. The hub is selected to match your engine's shaft and spline configuration, allowing a wide range of propeller options to fit your motor. Your local marine dealer or chandlery can usually help identify the correct hub and prop combination if you're unsure.


The Final Turn


If your boat accelerates slowly, struggles to stay on plane, burns more fuel than expected, or simply refuses to reach the manufacturer's recommended WOT RPM, don't assume the engine is the problem.


Sometimes the solution is sitting right behind it.


The best propeller isn't necessarily the one that produces the highest top speed. It's the one that allows your engine to operate in its intended RPM range while delivering the acceleration, efficiency, handling, and load-carrying ability that suits the way you use your boat.
