How to Shrink-Wrap Your Boat: The Complete DIY Guide

A good shrink-wrap job is essentially a custom-fitted winter tent, complete with its own roof structure, weatherproof cover and ventilation system.


Done properly, it keeps snow, rain, ice, UV and critters outside while giving the boat a relatively civilized winter.


DIY shrink-wrapping is entirely realistic for a reasonably handy boat owner.

Here's how to do it properly.


First question: Should you shrink-wrap at all?


I’m a firm believer that shrink wrap, when done correctly, is the best option for winter storage. But it isn't automatically the right answer for every boat.


Shrink-wrap is a the best choice if:


  • Your boat will spend the winter outside and exposed to snow, rain, and wind

  • You want a relatively inexpensive seasonal weather barrier

  • Your boat has an awkward shape that is difficult to cover with a standard cover

  • You want excellent snow shedding

  • You don't need regular access to the boat during winter

  • You're willing to spend an afternoon—or a weekend—building the support structure and learning the technique

  • keeping precipitation out of the boat is a priority

 

You might not want shrink wrap if:


  • You expect to work on the boat during the winter

  • You already own a good reusable winter cover

  • Your boat is stored indoors

  • You're dealing with a very large or complicated boat

  • You aren't comfortable with ladders and propane equipment


What does shrink wrap actually cost?


This is where DIY gets interesting.


Canadian professional prices vary substantially by region, boat size, framing requirements, and whether storage is included. $400–$800 for professional wrapping of a typical recreational boat is a reasonable planning range, with larger/complex boats going higher.

The DIY shopping list


Here's what you'll need:


1) Film


Marine shrink film is designed to be:


  • Heat-shrinkable

  • UV-inhibited

  • Waterproof

  • Strong and puncture resistant

  • Suitable for prolonged outdoor exposure


Retail marine film is commonly available in widths from roughly 12 to 40 feet or more, with 6–12 mil thicknesses depending on the product.


2) Strapping


You'll need:

  • 3/4-inch polyester shrink-wrap strap

  • Compatible buckles

  • Strap tensioner


The strap system holds the structure and wrap together, and provides an anchor and seam point for the film.


3) Tape


Three types:

  • Shrink-wrap tape

  • Heavy-duty repair tape

  • Anti-chafe tape


You'll use tape for pleats, repairs, access doors, vents and protecting vulnerable areas.


4) Vents


Vents let you keep precipitation out while allowing moisture vapour and condensation to escape.


5) Access Door


Optional, but highly recommended if there's any chance you'll need to enter the boat.


6) Frame Materials


The frame is what makes the shrink wrap work. I’ve always kept this fairly simply buy using 2x3’s and 1x2’s purchased at a hardware supply, and cut poles and backbone to size specifically for each boat that I work on.


The 2x3’s are used as vertical supports, and placed along the centreline of the vessel, every 6’ or so. The 1x2’s form a ridgeback that is the upper support for the shrink-wrap. The 2x3’s are cut to create a smooth slope for the ridgeback, at a height that allows snowfall to slide off the wrap, without weighing it down. I then add strapping for strength and support, running from the ridgeback and vertical supports to the rails and gunwhale.


7) The Heat Gun: Your Most Important Tool


A proper marine shrink-wrap heat gun is designed specifically for this work, with the appropriate burner, regulator and hose. Professional propane guns can produce 100,000 BTU’s+, and can cost between $300 and $1000.


8) Other Tools


You'll also want:

  • Propane cylinder

  • Correct regulator and hose

  • Heat-resistant gloves

  • Safety glasses

  • Fire extinguisher

  • Shrink-wrap knife or guarded cutter

  • Tape measure

  • Marker

  • Ladder or work platform

  • Foam/padding

  • A helper


Which shrink wrap should you buy?


6 mil


Good for:

  • Lightweight operations

  • Small boats

  • Sheltered storage

  • Milder conditions

  • Situations where minimizing material cost matters


7 mil:


For most recreational boats, 7-mil marine film is the starting point I'd recommend.

It's strong enough for outdoor winter storage without making the installation unnecessarily difficult. 


8–9 mil


Consider stepping up when you have:

  • A larger boat

  • Heavy snow

  • An exposed storage site

  • Lots of sharp hardware

  • A complicated structure

  • Particularly demanding winter conditions


White, Blue or Clear?


White: the all-rounder


White reflects sunlight and reduces heat buildup under the cover. It's a particularly sensible choice for a boat that will be sitting outside for months.


Blue: the snow country option


Blue film absorbs more solar energy, which can help with snow shedding.

That's why blue film is marketed specifically for outdoor locations where snow load is a concern. The trade-off is that it can become hotter underneath the cover. For a northern boatyard with serious snow, blue can make sense. For a sunny location where the boat may see substantial fall and spring warmth, white is often the safer general-purpose choice.


Clear: when you want to see things


Clear film is useful when:

  • The boat needs frequent inspection

  • You want natural light

  • You're preparing a brokerage boat

  • You expect to work inside occasionally


But keep in mind, the increased solar gain means ventilation becomes even more important.


How much film do you need?


Do not buy based on boat length alone. This is one of the most common purchasing mistakes.


Measure:

  • Overall boat length

  • Maximum beam

  • Height from ground/trailer to highest point

  • Windshield height

  • Hardtop or arch height

  • Radar arch

  • Towers

  • Rails

  • Other protrusions


Width


You need enough film to go: from the perimeter on one side → over the entire support structure → down to the perimeter on the other side, plus enough extra material to create the lower hem. If your boat has a high windshield or hardtop, this dimension can become surprisingly large.


Length


You need: boat length + bow allowance + stern allowance. The film roll's width needs to accommodate the cross-section of the boat, and its length needs to accommodate the boat's fore-and-aft dimension.


The DIY installation


Now we get to the part where the plastic meets the propane.


Step 1: Winterize the boat first


Take care of:

  • Engine cooling system

  • Plumbing

  • Water systems

  • Fuel system

  • Batteries

  • Oil

  • Gearcase

  • Bilge

  • Manufacturer-specific winterization requirements


Step 2: Clean it


Wash away:

  • Dirt

  • Salt

  • Bird deposits

  • Grease

  • Mildew

  • Let everything dry completely


Step 3: Build the frame


This is the most important part of the entire job. Think tent, not tarp. You want a continuous ridge running approximately bow to stern, with ribs sloping down toward the gunwales.




There should be positive slope everywhere. No flat valleys. The support system should be designed to carry the load and transfer it appropriately to the boat/trailer/storage supports.


Step 4: Protect the boat


Every potential contact point gets protection.


Think about:

  • Windshield corners

  • Antennas

  • Cleats

  • Rail fittings

  • Pole ends

  • Sharp fiberglass edges

  • Hardware

  • Mast/rigging contact points on sailboats


Use foam, purpose-made pole caps and anti-chafe material.


Sailboats deserve special consideration


Shrink-wrapping a sailboat is fundamentally the same process, but the rigging changes everything. If the mast is stepped, you need to decide whether to:

  • Wrap around the mast with appropriate reinforcement, or

  • Build the cover around the existing rigging configuration.


The mast, shrouds, stays, spreaders and deck hardware create numerous potential chafe points. A sailboat with an elaborate rig is one of the situations where professional wrapping becomes particularly attractive. And never design the winter cover in a way that compromises the support of the rigging or loads hardware in ways it wasn't designed to handle.


Step 5: Install the perimeter strap


Run a continuous strap around the boat a few inches above the waterline. This becomes the anchor for the bottom edge of the film. Add belly straps beneath the boat where appropriate. The objective is to create a complete load path rather than relying on the plastic to resist wind by itself.


Step 6: Lay the shrink-wrap


I roll the wrap out on the ground and cut to length first. I then lay in out along the Ridgeline of the frame, before unfolding it and draping it over the gunwales.


Choose a calm day. Center it carefully.


You want approximately equal overhang on both sides and enough material at the bottom to form your hem.


Step 7: Form the bottom hem


Pull the lower edge around the perimeter strap. Where the hull shape changes, you'll have excess material. Turn that excess into neat pleats. Don't make enormous random folds. Neat, evenly distributed pleats will shrink and seal much more predictably. Use shrink-wrap tape to temporarily hold them.


Step 8: Seal the perimeter


Now bring out the heat gun. You're establishing the bottom seal and mechanically attaching the film around the perimeter. Heat the film according to the manufacturer's instructions, keeping the heat moving continuously. You want the layers to bond without burning through the film.


Step 9: Shrink the cover


Now the magic happens. Use broad, controlled passes with the heat gun.


A typical sequence is:

  1. Lower perimeter

  2. Lower sides

  3. Upper sides

  4. Bow

  5. Stern

  6. Top

  7. Final wrinkles


As the film reaches its shrink temperature, it will suddenly tighten. Keep the tool moving. Follow the film and heat-tool manufacturer's instructions for operating distance and technique.


Step 10: Pay special attention to windshields


Windshields are classic trouble spots. Protect the edges with appropriate anti-chafe material.


Keep concentrated heat away from:

  • Acrylic

  • Plastic trim

  • Rubber seals

  • Painted surfaces

  • Sensitive electronics

  • Other heat-sensitive components


Step 11: Install ventilation


Now install the vents according to the manufacturer's instructions.

The exact number depends on boat size, film system, and conditions, but a small boat will generally need several strategically positioned vents.


Vents help manage:

  • Condensation

  • Moisture

  • Mold

  • Mildew


Step 12: Install an access door


If you'll need access during winter, install a purpose-made zipper door.

This is much better than attacking the finished cover with a utility knife and hoping tape will reconstruct your mistake.


Step 13: Inspect everything


Look for:

  • Loose film

  • Sagging sections

  • Flat areas

  • Water traps

  • Unprotected sharp edges

  • Chafing

  • Torn film

  • Loose straps

  • Poorly sealed pleats

  • Inadequate ventilation


Small tears can generally be repaired with compatible shrink-wrap tape or patches.



The professional-vs-DIY decision


Here's the simplest way to look at it. Pay a professional if:


  • Your boat is large.

  • It has a complicated hardtop or arch.

  • It's a sailboat with complicated rigging.

  • You're uncomfortable with propane heat equipment.

  • Your storage location gets serious snow and wind.

  • You need the job done quickly.

  • You don't expect to shrink-wrap another boat.

  • You don't want to spend your October Saturday discovering that 40 feet of polyethylene has a mind of its own.


DIY if:


  • Your boat is roughly 16–25 feet.

  • You have a straightforward layout.

  • You're mechanically handy.

  • You have a helper or two.

  • You're willing to buy the proper equipment.

  • You expect to do it for several years.

  • You enjoy learning how things work.


For a first-timer, 18–24 feet is a very reasonable range in which to learn the technique, provided the boat doesn't have an unusually complicated structure.


One last thought


The most important purchase isn't actually the plastic. It's the support system.


A perfectly good roll of shrink wrap cannot compensate for a bad frame. Give the cover a continuous ridge, eliminate flat areas, protect every sharp contact point, anchor the perimeter properly and provide ventilation.


And remember the three rules of successful winter storage: Keep the water out. Give the snow somewhere to go. Give the moisture somewhere to escape. #tips
