A dramatic scene went viral on September 2nd as the brand new Dolce Vento luxury yacht capsized and sank 15 minutes into its maiden voyage off the coast of Ereğli, Turkey.
The 24-metre (78-foot) yacht is believed to have suffered a stabilization issue immediately after launching and quickly went down in 7 meters (23 feet) of water.
The yacht's owner, captain, and two crew were seen in the viral video diving into the water as the boat capsized. All passengers were quickly rescued by nearby shipyard workers. The Coast Guard and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene. No one was injured.
The Dolce Vento was built by the Medyilmaz Shipyard beginning in 2024. The vessel carries a gross tonnage of 160 with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. It is the largest vessel ever built by the company.
Medyilmaz was founded in 1974 in Zolguldak, Ereğli, Turkey as a small vessel welder and repair shop. The shipyard expanded in 1985 to building and repairing larger boats and yachts. The region is deeply rooted in maritime construction and sits on the coast of the Black Sea. The area is just 250 km from Istanbul and the Bosphorus Strait connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.
An investigation has been launched into the sinking.
