The 10 Safe Boating Commandments

Safe Boating Awareness Week is an international program designed to remind boaters of the need to practise safe boating. This week long event just concluded for another year.

To ensure that some boaters don’t assume next week is “Careless Boating Week” I decided

to post a ten point boater’s guideline that I wrote a few years ago and was posted at numerous marinas and boat ramps across the country.

No need to complicate matters. This list is simple, straightforward, and easily memorized. Hopefully these 10 reminders will help ensure you have a happy and safe summer on the water.

1) I will never operate my boat beyond the level of my driving skills.

2) I will be aware of and obey all laws and regulations governing the operation of my boat.

3) I will always operate my boat with caution and watch for other traffic and concerns.

4) I will minimize my wake impact on shorelines, docks, structures and people in the water.

5) I will always steer well clear of other boats and swimmers and follow the rules of 'give-way' and 'stand-on'

6) I will set a speed and heading that is safe and comfortable for my passengers and others.

7) I will carry on board all equipment necessary to operate my boat safely and within the law.

8) I will provide a safety briefing to all passengers that includes where all equipment is located.

9) I will not consume alcohol or drugs in my boat or allow anyone to drive who has.

10) I understand that boating is a shared experience and I will not operate my boat in a manner that disturbs the enjoyment of our waters by others.

Let's all work on making it a “Safe Boating Year."
