#QuickTips - How to Get That Winter Aroma Out Of Your Boat

Pick up a 110V light bulb, vinegar, bleach, and cedar essential oil before you launch your boat this spring.

Spring time is the best time to make your boat ready for the summer season and one item that many of us forget is the odour that remains in the boat after the winter.

Here are a few things that can cause your boat to stink and how to eliminate them.

Dampness can build up while stored and result in an unpleasant odour in your boat. There are several ways to correct moisture, the most obvious being open any hatches and canvas on a warm day and air the interior. Add a fan for extra help. While you are away from the boat, leave a 110v light bulb on or a low power draw boat heater in the boat. It won’t take much heat to completely remove the moisture. But safety first, especially if the boat will be unattended. If an odour persists, you can always add a scented air freshener.

Boat heads are never known for smelling great. Wipe them down with paper towels and leave some vinegar, liquid bleach, or commercial toilet cleaner such as Lysol in the bowl. Make this a part of your boating etiquette and keep these products on hand. Assuming an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, be sure to demonstrate to all guests, the best way to operate your head and remind them to use as little marine toilet paper as possible.

Hanging lockers can also emit odour. You can restore or create that pleasant cedar smell in any closet by applying a little cedar spray or cedar essential oil. An affordable and wide selection can be found just about anywhere that sells cleaning supplies.

Don’t be a stinker. Take the necessary corrective steps before you get used to it. #quicktips
