Garmin Wireless 'Man Overboard' (MOB) System Changing How Boaters Connect with Their Vessel

The new OnBoard MOB System from Garmin sets a new standard in marine safety.

Garmin has introduced OnBoard, a new wireless man-overboard (MOB) and engine-cutoff system that will change the way boaters connect to their boat and ensure their safety. The new OnBoard system is different from traditional tethered-cord designs as it employs wireless tags that can be worn on a wrist-band, attached to a carabiner, or fixed to a floatable key ring. In turn, the captain or crew has free movement throughout the vessel without compromising their safety.

Each wireless tag can be configured for “captain” or “passenger,” with different protocols for each. The system also supports up to eight tags — enabling a captain to monitor adults, children, pets, or objects simultaneously while underway.

In the event the system detects a MOB incident, OnBoard immediately records a waypoint on the chartplotter and activates audible alarms. If the captain’s tag is triggered, OnBoard automatically cuts the engine. Alternatively, if the captain configures it this way, they can choose to disable the engine via a button on the tag.

In a press release, Susan Lyman, Garmin’s Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, said: “Wearing an MOB tag that can activate an engine kill switch on a boat can potentially save lives. As part of our commitment to making boating safer and more enjoyable for everyone, we designed Garmin OnBoard with safety and convenience in mind using wireless, non-intrusive tags that will bring the boat to a stop and alert those on board if an MOB event is detected.”

Key features of the OnBoard system include:

  • Setup, pairing and management of MOB tags via compatible Garmin ECHOMAP and GPSMAP chartplotters

  • Wireless tags that allow free movement around the vessel without a tether

  • Chartplotter integration for automatic waypoint recording and audible alerts at the moment of MOB detection

  • Temporary tag disablement to permit swimming or excursions without triggering MOB alerts

  • Tag battery life sufficient to last beyond a typical boating season

  • Compatibility with any boat equipped with an engine-cutoff switch and a compatible Garmin chartplotter.

The Garmin OnBoard System will be available this month for a suggested retail price of $499.99 USD. Additional MOB tags are available for $149.99 USD. Installation of the Garmin OnBoard System by a qualified marine installer is recommended
