Volvo Penta Reveals Hybrid D13 IPS Propulsion System for Yachts

Volvo Penta D13 IPS hybrid

Volvo Penta has unveiled a new hybrid propulsion platform for yachts, the D13 IPS Hybrid, with plans for a widescale market launch later in 2026.

The hybrid system combines diesel and electric propulsion technology into what the company describes as a fully integrated “helm-to-propeller” package for yachts in the 70 to 100-foot range.

The company released its first fully electric IPS propulsion package last year.

The new hybrid propulsion system pairs Volvo Penta’s D13 diesel engine platform with IPS pod drives and a DC electric motor. According to the company, the hybrid system is designed to offer multiple operating modes, including full electric propulsion, hybrid operation, and conventional diesel power.

Volvo Penta said the system is intended to reduce emissions, vibration, and onboard noise while improving operational flexibility for yacht owners and builders. In electric mode, the company says yachts can operate at approximately 6 knots for up to four hours, depending on vessel configuration and battery capacity.

Hanna Ljungqvist, Volvo Penta Marine Business SVP, said in a press release, “Our new Volvo Penta D13 IPS Hybrid is a complete helm-to-propeller marine solution. By delivering a fully integrated package with one point of responsibility, we simplify everything from design and installation to operation and service, while elevating onboard comfort and performance.”

“The D13 IPS Hybrid combines propulsion, electric motors, batteries, energy and cooling management and controls into a single package.”

Central to the system’s innovation is its fully integrated architecture. All components are connected through Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system, ensuring that signature features like Joystick DrivingAssisted DockingAutopilot and Glass Cockpit operate across all drive modes. This integration provides precise control, particularly in low-speed maneuvering and tight docking situations, while maintaining a consistent and intuitive user experience.

Nicola Pomi, Volvo Penta vice president of yacht and superyacht sales, added: “By working as a single partner across the full system, we can support customers from initial design through installation and operation. This level of co-engineering and collaboration enables more efficient builds, optimized performance and greater flexibility in yacht design.”

The propulsion package includes lithium iron phosphate battery packs available in two configurations: 147 kWh and 221 kWh. The batteries are liquid-cooled and have received DNV approval.

The hybrid system also allows battery charging while underway and can support hotel loads onboard without requiring a separate generator in some installations. The batteries can recharge in as little as 45 minutes while operating in generator mode at anchor.

Tthe D13 IPS Hybrid platform was developed using electrification expertise from across the broader Volvo Group. The company noted that its diesel engines have been compatible with HVO100 renewable fuel since 2016.

The company also confirmed that Azimut Yachts and Sanlorenzo are among the first builders expected to adopt the system. Volvo Penta said it is working with additional OEM partners ahead of the commercial rollout.

The D13 IPS Hybrid follows earlier development work by Volvo Penta on hybrid-electric IPS propulsion systems announced in late 2025.
