Sea Ray Reinvents 400 SLX with New Mercury V12 Outboard

By: Scott Way

The 2022 Sea Ray SLX 400 OB will now be available with twin 7.6L V12 600 hp Verado® engines

Sea Ray's signature SLX 400 has been redone for 2021 with an outboard iteration sporting the new Mercury V12 Verado engine. The engine will be available as an optional upgrade to compliment the outboard layout and, should buyers choose it, will boost the potential of the SLX 400 with a substantial 7.6L 600hp power plant. The platform is also available with standard triple Mercury Racing 450R engines.

The new Mercury V12 is full of industry firsts, most notably as the inaugural12 cylinder outboard to hit the market. It also boasts an independent lower gearcase, meaning that during steering the engine itself does not rotate, only the lower unit does. This maximizes available space on the swim platform while also offering greater maneuverability as the V12 Verado is capable of 45 degrees of rotation relative to the 30 degree rotation of a standard outboard. The independent gearcase improves handling and control, particularly at low speeds and with larger vessels, and a smoother, more refined driving experience is aided by an automatic two-speed transmission, another industry first. The V12 Verado is also available with some of the industry's most refined digital controls, including Mercury’s Next Gen Digital Throttle & Shift system, and an unmatched sound-dampening system.

According to Sea Ray president Steve Langlais, “The 600hp Verado, the newest engine advancement from Mercury, was a natural fit as a new power option for the SLX 400 Outboard. The boat’s legacy as the complete entertainer has now begun a new chapter complemented by the 600hp Verado outboard engine’s astounding power, efficiency-enhancing features, effortless handling and whisper-quiet operation to give boaters an even better on-water experience.”

As for the SLX 400 itself, the yacht-certified vessel offers Joystick Piloting and notable entertainment options. A best-in-class layout carries seating for 22 passengers, and Sea Ray signature options like the sunpad and fold-down swim terrace are also available. Below deck, the cabin layout sleeps four and offers a smart design for maximized comfort and escape from the elements. Other highlights include an advanced Dual Digital Dash™ helm with Simrad® NSO evo3 16-inch touchscreen displays, a premium Fusion® Apollo RA770 audio system, Quiet Ride™ featuring Tuned Transom® and optional Dynamic Running Surface™.

The new Mercury V12 Verado outboard edition will be available on the SLX 400 for model year 2022 production, which will begin allocation in third quarter 2021.
