Inside Boston Whaler's 420 Outrage 50th Anniversary Edition

By: Scott Way

After five decades since the launch of the original 1971 Outrage model, Boston Whaler has unveiled a Limited Edition 50th Anniversary 420 Outrage to commemorate the occasion. The boat is more than just a limited edition, though, as it showcases a glimpse of Whaler's future plans with several previously unavailable features. The boat also includes several exclusive gifts to buyers, including a custom helm pad, unreleased artwork detailing the Outrage's development, and a coffee table book showcasing the boat's history.

According to Boston Whaler president Nick Stickler, “it’s a powerful next-generation offshore cruiser that represents the future of the Whaler brand. We’re eager for boaters to experience it.”

The biggest feature is Mercury's all-new 600 hp V12 Verado engines. As the industry's first V12 outboard, the 600 hp Verado is already changing how manufacturers are designing and implementing power in their boats and will be an attractive addition for any future 420 Outrage owner. The 420 had previously been available with either quad Mercury 400's or quad Mercury 450R V8 engines. The additional power of the V12's will come in handy as the 420 Outrage packs a 42'6" LOA, a 13' beam, 31" of draught, and a loaded weight (with engines, fuel, and water) of 29,500 lbs.

The boat also includes Mercury's Joystick Piloting for easy handling and improved fuel efficiency. A 700 gallon (2650 liters) fuel tank will services the power and provides a much improved range. A Skyhook/autopilot keypad also make for easy operation at the help and a Seekeeper Gyro Stabilization system makes for an even smoother ride underneath all that power.

In terms of aesthetics, a black hardtop frame is a distinct departure from Whaler's typical appearances, and to complement the hardtop is matching custom upholstery in a sea gray colour. Inside the cabin the darker colour scheme is showcased throughout with the deck, seating, footrests, and cupholders in teak accents.

Hullside colours are also available in non-standard colours, as well as four gel coat colours for under the hardtop. Custom painted engines are matched to the darkened theme.

Typical of Whalers is an eye for fishing prowess, and the 50th anniversary edition also includes features and options outside the standard fare. 40 gallon and 25 gallon livewells, a custom bait/prep centre, and a Frostbox refrigeration system for refrigerator and electric grill round out the long list of standard fishing features found on the 420. There is also an optional flybridge, which also seems like a necessity, and includes a full help control box with VesselView screen and DTS throttle and shift. There's also a three passenger bench seat with flip-up bolsters and an upper lounge station.

Below deck other standout offerings for the 50th anniversary edition include a 28" flatscreen HDTV, a full galley with microwave, fridge/freezer, sink and storage, and a convertible double berth and convertible pull-out settee.
