Montreal, Quebec's Taiga Motors has resumed manufacturing operations and will begin deliveries of its 2025 Orca PWC.
The launch of the Canadian-made electric PWC will include multiple new features and enhancements.
The company underwent restructuring in late 2024 which included its sale to UK entrepreneur Stewart Wilkinson. Wilkinson and his subsidiaries own electric propulsion and charging companies that include the popular brands Vita, Evoy, and Aqua superPower.
Despite recent challenges, the Orca PWC is an innovative personal watercraft boasting leading technology in electric propulsion.
The launch of the Orca Carbon in 2022 included impressive performance figures like a 160 horsepower motor producing up to 120kW and a range of 45 km. Other standout features included a fully composite carbon fiber body, the choice of 7 different exterior colour schemes, a top speed of 104 km/h (55 knots), GPS mapping and speed readings, and LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity.
The restarting of Orca production will see Taiga aim for an annual production capacity of up to 8000 units. They will also begin production of the company's electric snowmobile, the Nomad, in fall 2025.
"Restarting production in such a short time is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team and the support of great partners," stated Matthew Taylor, vice president of operations at Taiga in a press release.
"We’ve leveraged years of operational lessons to build a robust, vertically integrated advanced manufacturing system right here in Canada. Everyone at Taiga is proud to persevere in leading production of the only personal watercraft still made in Canada."
Taiga has focused its efforts on advancing the foundational technology of high-performance electric products at an accessible price point, with the Orca being offered at a starting MSRP of $24,699 CAD for 2025.
The new Orca will also include the latest battery cooling technology, a result of extensive new engineering efforts and R&D. The latest new tech involves optimizing fluid flow across the lithium-ion cell hotspots within the battery pack, leading to a 65% increase in continuous battery power in warm-weather marine settings. Coupled with recent software updates, the new Orca also has an extended peak charging rate that reduces DC fast charging times to under 30 minutes.
All Taiga PWCs also have mobile app connectivity so users can check their battery status, watercraft health, and a host of other helpful data.
“The rapid introduction of new battery technologies is possible thanks to Taiga’s vertical integration, bringing advanced engineering and automated production together all under one roof,” said Paul Achard, chief of engineering at Taiga.
“We are excited to implement this breakthrough battery technology in our upcoming snowmobile production and future powertrain products.”
